Nasi Jamblang

Just like gudeg is from Jogjakarta, nasi gandul is from Pati, Cirebon has its own specialty. I mentioned empal gentong and lamb satay previously. Those are for main courses. For comfort food, Cirebon has rujak Donggala (veggies and fruits marinated in sweet and sour syrup and enjoyed by adding some fried peanut), docang (a light soupy dish from fermented soybeans with beansprouts and rice cracker. Sometimes when I look at this dish, I thought,'What a healthy dish for people who are trying to have babies :) ) and mie koclok (noodle covered with thick white sauce made of chicken stock with garlic and pepper, garnished with chopped boiled chicken. It is best served hot. :p)

For breakfast, you must try nasi jamblang if you are in town. They have plenty of the food stalls in front of GRAGE MALL in Gunung Sari area. Thankfully, some of them are open during this holiday season.

The rice (=nasi) is in small packets of Jati leaves, only half of an adult's fist. A normal person can eat at least two packets of rice. To accompany the rice, the seller has a special sambal goreng (chili paste that is fried until fragrant and oily) and we can choose anything we like. In the past, this kind of breakfast was very simple and cheap. People used to have the rice only with spiced-whole-boiled-mini potato chunks, potato patties (almost like harsh brown but not grated), and fried salted fish. It's yummy already.

But, looking at the choices we have here? I couldn't resist trying other dish.
