Last 1st batch was amazing. Minute by minute I learned what these kindergarten teachers are so passionate about. Most of them agree that learning in kindergarten doesn't involve tests, evaluations, not even homework. They said that it's a government policy. Some schools that practice this could lose their license. In my mind I thought, why is it so rampantly done then? The next question is what about the English interviews kids should undergo to enroll in some elementary schools? Besides, now there's tight competition which make any parent paranoid and enroll their kids as early as possible and get them to learn the school materials. The more difficult, the better.
What's so amazing about them inspite of that low English competence score? They stand by to what they believe in. Kids are meant to play. They deserve larger allocation of family time because that's what the kids need. In their schools, they don't force their children to be the people that they are not. Instead, the teachers help each kid to grow and choose their own area of expertise.
This brought me to my own reflection. I had a great childhood. I went to a small kindergarten that taught me to socialize. My mom, quiting from a pharmacy major in a university, decided to become a housewife after I was born. She taught me all the songs that I still remember until now. She didn't ask me to study really hard or to be number one like the other kids' mother. Instead she taught me to mind my manner, be independent and confident, modest, and learn that everything has its own moment. All by examples.
These concepts are also what these teachers apply. Their teaching is not about making smart kids but more on the value of life. These teachers say that they would leave the intelligence and evaluation part to their colleagues in elementary school so they can focus on the character building. What a concept.
