Three days ago my friends and I went to another TEATER KOMA's performance. It was something that I have been waiting for since December and I was lucky enough to have the company of a friend who had just arrived from Oz. We went to KOMA's previous shows before and watching another show was like a reunion.
Booking tickets for KOMA's performance was never this difficult. First of all, all seats were booked for any weekends. Then we changed the schedule and we got some empty seats. Normally, all we have to do is just transferring the money, faxing the receipt and then exchanging the receipt with the original ticket. This time, the ticketing person really did make sure by making SEVERAL phone calls, which was quite an awkward gesture.
So, what's the story about? Sie Jin Kui. That's the title.
Basically it's about a man who came to a king's dream and his coming would do good to the kingdom. Realizing a dream, you guess it, is never an easy task. Many people who wanted the throne made sure that Sie Jin Kui didn't make his way to see the king. By ANY means possible. Yet, a fate is a fate. No matter how hard men tried, they couldn't fight the force of their Creator. And finally Sie Jin Kui met the king and became the great defender of the kingdom.

The decor for the Kingdom scene: extravagant and meticulously grand
What about the show? Well, I did look forward to the songs and the singing as it was told in the promotion brochures. In the past, I could stand a 4-hour performance presented in only meaningful dialogs. The only 'songs' were bamboo sticks struck on the floor or the murmuring of the dancers. But, only if I have to. That night, I was particularly very tired, sleepy not to mention having a headache the day before. So, the songs and musics really helped to keep me awake during the 19.30-to-00.30 show.
As I've said, I've been to performances before. I find an interesting fact in this one. The setting and decor of the stage when involving Chinese themes are more attractive and done meticulously compared to the ones in Western or any other themes.
The props are nicely done. Adequate amount of glitters for the attires and enough vision and sound effects that support the storyline. It's quite different from a performance I came to see from a different group two months ago that involved a lot of lightening-type of effects. Instead of making the story come alive, the effects blinded the audience's eyes. Too bad. I covered my face most of the time.

My favorite player, Budi Ros, became the 'dalang' in this performance. And, oh, his tone was as powerful as before. Hmmm. I wonder when I could take a picture with him?

Adequate effect like when a goddess showed up in a cave. They used a small stage decorated with so many lights that represent lights from heaven
