Childhood Birthday Celebration & A Wish

When we were kids, my parents always made sure that we celebrate our birthdays 'properly'. 'Properly' would mean a birthday cake and candles, inviting neighbors and friends, giving presents, and holding a small celebration at home.

You see, we were not rich but we were not poor either. Dunno exactly because my parents never showed how difficult life was and I found out that life wasn't easy at all when I was in junior high school. The wedding rings they had to sell just for my milk. The various moonlighting my father had to take for our schooling: teaching and making paper, appearing on television. The loans they had to take. I got the feeling that they did more than that but they didn't bother to let me know.... :-(

Mom would usually prepare our birthday celebration. She'd bake, cook and arrange the decoration and 'the take away'. One thing that was never absent : ice-cream. Living in a small town in the 1970's, ice-cream was considered a luxury. Every invitee in my party would expect to have a cup of ice-cream as part of their goodie bag content. Many kids would come to the party regardless they're invited or not. ;-) But, that's okay. The more, the merrier. Hehehe....

Now, as I get older, I look back and remember everything. The birthday celebration rituals are over. No more self-made birthday cake. No more Campina ice-cream. No more inviting friends at home. It's OK. I still get birthday wishes and kisses from the folks at home and I am happy with that. I am also happy that now my sister has her own income so I can start expecting birthday gifts for many years to come. ;-) Birthdays are GOOOODDDD.... ;-D

God,
If I could ask for a gift from You this year
It's been a long time since I had a dream
So please....
Let me dream of Mom tonight
Amen
