I slept restlessly till I finally decided I couldn't sleep anymore and took a very early bath. At 7, I made my way to my kampong, a place where I grew up. There's this traditional market that I always visit when I'm in town. Besides that, I'd go to the 'ndalem' and my kindergarten.
After arriving at the market, I listened to the conversations and watched the faces I once knew. Listening to conversations is my way to maintaining my Javanese, a language which I rarely use when I'm in Jakarta. I may get the same words when I'm at the mall listening to Chinese Javanese talking. But not the tone. It's so specific. The choice of words that is very contextual. And certainly, no place can beat the atmosphere.
My Mom taught me to shop alone when I was in my second grade. I picked up my Javanese from interactions in the market. Among other interactions. :-) I was only 7! Until now I still wonder why my Mom wasn't even afraid to 'let me go'. I was very different from other kids in the neighborhood. I was very fair, red haired, taller than other kids my age. A nice target of crime.
Anyway, we're still talking about the market right? I still remember who sells what there. WOW! It turns out I have good memory,eh?
After that market visit, I went back to the hotel. I needed my sleep. My stomach began to hurt. There were contractions which are indescribable.
At 9 after a short nap, I took the same becak to the Great Mosque to watch the Gunungan preparation. I knew it's a long shot but I still had to try my luck. And yesss, I was lucky. The first 'gunungan' was sent out. I thought this one was for Pakualaman. I took some pics under the scorching heat of the sun. Maaan, it was so hot and I was wearing a jacket because of my illness. Stupid move. Hahahaha.
Worried that I might faint, I was there only for a while. There were hundreds of people, tens of motorcycles and becaks. I ran to my loyally awaiting becak driver and asked him to go to another place. Taman Sari.
Taman Sari.
Ahhh, I've never felt bored when I'm in this place. I could see a difference compared to the last time I visited the place in 2004. There was a major renovation late that year that made the place cleaner. I could also see the water fountains work well. Taking pictures here never bores me. It's beautiful in every angle. I heard that the place is also used as a wedding place for those who desire to hold one for a price. Oh wow. Could it be? Hihihihi.
Anyway, pics of 'gunungan moment, my visits to my kampong and Taman Sari will be posted after I'm back.
